Are You Really Doing What You Love?

I just read a very interesting book right now called “The Big Idea” by Donny Deusch, host of CNBC’s tv show by the same name. He makes an interesting observation when it comes to realizing whether or not you are really doing what you love.

Donny Deusch says,

“In our buttoned-up, boxed-in society, the idea of choosing a career based on love sounds like madness- as crazy as taking a leap off a high bridge. But one thing I’ve learned, from my own experience and talking to other wildly successful and wildly happy people, is that it’s not that scary and it’s not that crazy.”

I have a friend who recently took a leap of faith, quitting her job and starting her own business without having a clear-cut plan. She just knew that she was not happy where she was and it was time to pursue her passion. How she knew that NOW was the time is unclear - she just knew.

According to the book, there are a few questions you can ask yourself to see if you are ready to do what you love AND be successful with your endeavor:

1. As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

2. More importantly, why? What emotional need did that dream satisfy?

3. Does that emotional connection exist in your current job?

4. What gives you a high? If you had three hours to do anything, what would you do?

5. How could you translate that into making your millions? What kind of business could fulfill your emotional need? (Make a list)

You need to find a way to use your adult interests and skills to satisfy your oldest emotional needs. It may take trial and error, but there is a path for you that can combine them all. If you can focus on your passions in life, and have the motivation to follow them, you are already on the road to the American dream!
