What Do You Call The Person Who Graduated Last In His Medical School Class?

Well, what do you call that person?

We spend much of our lives in a state of homeostasis, or trying to keep a balance of where we think we’re supposed to be.

Think of a thermostat. It’s set at a certain temperature. If the room gets too cold, the heater comes on. Warm air is pumped in until the room is goes back to the thermostat setting. If there’s a cooling unit, same thing happens when the room gets too warm.

That’s homeostasis.

Human beings, especially in their interactions with others have that same mechanism. We have a set point for our lives, and for our dealings with the significant people in our lives. When things get too hot for our comfort level, we cool them down. If they cool down too much, we turn up the heat. Balance is restored - at least our own personal version of balance.

Now some of us - especially the wise, ambitious far-sighted people reading this story - want to grow. Even when the forces around us pull back to our current reality, we still have that desire for more.

The discomfort of breaking out of our little box kicks in.

But so does what Eric Butterworth calls Divine Dissatisfaction. “Dammit, I’m supposed to be doing more!”

You may be in that place. I’m often in that place. Someone who I love dearly is in that place right now.

There’s a saying many of the modern day sages use, and it may be the right one for you to hear right now…

“You don’t have to get it right. You just have to get it going.”

My dear friend wants to get it right. She is SO blessed with wisdom and love it makes her crazy to not express all of it.

I hear you.

Please understand this: the Universe supports those who make a commitment to their dreams, even when things seem way out of balance.

And our institutions - family, workplace, soccer leagues etc. - can be surprisingly flexible when it comes to supporting people who want change.

The ones that aren’t? Don’t worry. You’ll either overpower them, or move on.

You’ll stumble, fall, get scraped up…

…and find those who are moving in your direction and receive love and comfort from them.

You don’t have to get it right. You just have to get it going.

So what do you call the person who graduated last in his class from medical school?

Doctor.

With Love,
Larry
