You Are A Leader (Yes, YOU)
Sep 22nd, 2008 | By Larry Hochman | Category: Inspiration/MotivationYou are a leader.
Whether you like it or not, YOU are a leader.
The reason I say this is because leadership involves two elements…leaders and followers.
And someone is following you…so you are a leader.
You’re also a follower, but we’ll get to that later.
If you chose to read this post, you’re no doubt a forward thinking, courageous soul who actively seeks out the challenges of leadership, so the word “leader” doesn’t give you undue amounts of anxiety.
I’m going to say it again…you are a leader.
What makes someone a leader? Is it because they’re in the front of the room? Maybe.
Is it because they have the most success in a given endeavor and people want to see what they’re doing? Perhaps.
Is it because someone feels so inadequate at a task that they’re willing to take direction from anyone, and you’re the closest person around who seems to have some degree of competence? Could be that also!
Leadership is often situational. I’m no longer involved with building the home business organization that got this whole thing started. When I was and it came to maneuvering the organization, I deferred to my people who came before me.
They was the leaders. They knew things I didn’t know, and there were things I had to learn from them. So I did the best I could to shut my mouth and open my ears.
So that’s situational leadership.
Then there’s a more lasting kind…I guess I’ll call it spiritual or moral leadership.
Remember the person in front of the room at the microphone? If he or she is the one with the power… with the authority to provide the leadership, people in the audience are going to stay focused on him or her.
If that person has the position but not the POWER that goes along with it, the folks in the audience is going to be looking to someone in the crowd…the one who REALLY calls the shots…to see what the real scoop is.
This is leadership by being a role model.
When you get into the grown-up world, that power is earned, whether you have the title or not. People will seek it out.
When you’re a kid, hopefully it’s coming from parents or other primary care-givers…and not the television… or the other kids.
Kids will give the grown-ups a pass for a while…whether the leadership being provided by the grown-ups in their lives is valid or not, the kids will accept it up to a certain point, either because there are no other sources for it, or because the kids love you so much that they want to believe you’re a good role model.
So they accept whatever leadership you’re offering…good, bad or indifferent.
Things change as those kids get older, don’t they!
At some point, the leadership has to be earned. And the best way to earn that leadership and keep it is by committing to the welfare and best interests of those who would follow you.
It’s very simple. If you want to be a leader, be someone worth following.
Stay the course. Make the tough decisions.
And live by the example you set for your followers.
Have a Magnificent Week,
Larry
