From adhesives, to disinfectants to pyrotechnics to wines and liquors.. it’s all here.  This is the kind of information and knowledge that is distributed among a variety of crafts and educational disciplines that could easily be lost without the culmination and cooperation of a large community of  people and industries.  A very interesting and useful book to have around.

See photos for condition of book and dust cover (click to enlarge).  I tend to grade lower than Alibris guidelines.  This book is in good shape, dust cover is discolored with age, some tears along edges.

• Books that have been “cleaned” by the auction house- meaning all papers, bookmarks, etc.. have been removed or

• Books that have been haphazardly piled in boxes or shelves

• Books sitting exactly as they did when the owner occupied the home

In this case, the books were exactly as they had been found, neatly arranged in a bedroom bookshelf- and inside the front pages of “Chessie Racing” I found more than a nice personal inscription, but also a letter to the recipient as well as the author’s professional resume.  The letter was touching, as Collins identified the recipient’s husband as a ‘great inspiration’ during his time in the USAF at Perrin Air Force Base.

I was very surprised to find this book tucked away in a small vintage shop in my north Texas home town.   Sandwiched between moderns to the left and partial sets of encyclopedias to the right- it literally stuck out like a sore thumb.  So why did it take me three trips into the shop before I finally put down the tiny amount of cash asked for this gem?  Probably because I didn’t know enough about book scouting to know what I had found.  This was my first real sale, with a hefty profit thanks to it’s semi-rareness, low price, and an professor who wanted it.
